WHY DO YOU LOVE BARCELONA

I

Finally, my first answer on football, the love of my life!

It was the 2010 FIFA World Cup. I didn't know much about football at that time, I never used to watch it. I used to be a fan of cricket, just like any typical iNDONESIAN. But the electrifying build up to this tournament in school, in the neighborhood and in the streets meant that I couldn't keep myself from watching it. There was a lot of hype around a 23 year old Messi who played for Argentina. About him being the best player in the world, this would be his world cup (playing under Maradona) and all that sort of thing. I decided that Messi is the man I would look out for, in this world cup. I followed Argentina closely. As one would expect, Messi was indeed wonderful to watch. But bad luck for me, Argentina were completely outplayed by Germany in the quarter finals, losing 4–0. I continued watching the remaining matches in the world cup. I realized that Spain was the team that deserved it the most, and was happy with their triumph.

I wanted to know more about this guy, Messi. After the world cup ended, I went across a newspaper article discussing how Messi who is a beast for Barcelona (knew nothing about Barcelona at that time) was most often a 'flop' for the national team (screw me, I believed them as I didn't know all the facts then). The article showed his jaw dropping numbers with Barcelona, and the relatively pale numbers with Argentina. The article also discussed on Barcelona's influence on Spain's triumph. Majority of the players on the Spanish XI played for Barcelona under Pep Guardiola at that time.

I wanted to watch more of Barcelona. I watched YouTube videos and was quite impressed. Then came the 2010–11 season, which was to become one of the greatest seasons in the history of club football. It didn't take too many matches for me to realize that this team was indeed special. It had a unique philosophy that made it different from every other team. Then came the much awaited Clasico, in October. A complete domination of Real Madrid ending in a 5–0 win, with Pique holding out five fingers towards the fans will never be forgotten by any Barça fan. With that performance, I firmly established myself as a true Barça fan.

With time, I went across magazines, newspapers and TV programmes to know morr about this club. They helped me know about the foundation of this club, the oppressive times under Franco's regime, about Kubala, about Johann Cruyff's arrival (and how it changed the destiny of this club forever), the Nunéz era and Johann Cruyff's second arrival as a coach, the Dream Team and the 1992 European Cup triumph, the Laporta era and the circumstances leading to Pep taking over as coach and the golden days that followed.

Over the years, I have seen this club going through ups and downs. There were so many moments, so many emotions. Watching this team, I sometimes laugh, I scream, I open my mouth with awe, and sometimes they have made me cry as well (the Chelsea defeat of 2012, the Bayern defeat of 2013 etc). The experiences I have had following Barça have been unique, that nothing else in my life could provide. I know we are only a shadow of the team we were, when I started watching football but still, I'm proud to support this team. Maybe once Messi hangs up his boots, I might part ways with the sport. But I can never think of supporting any other team.

The point of view

  • It has a great history. Barca are one of the best clubs in the world.
  • It has Messi in it, besides a host of talented players like Iniesta.
  • It’s possession based tiki-taka playing style is beautiful to watch.
  • It has tasted a lot of success in the recent past, more so domestically.
  • Legendary players like Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Xavi, Figo etc. have played for Barca in the past.
  • The sad part is a vast majority of the fans are primarily, Messi fans. If he doesn’t play or leaves the club some day, their loyalties will most likely switch to the new club he will join. There are some supporters again who like to undermine some of their own players to glorify Messi (which Messi doesn’t need. He is a genius in his own right.)

And until whenever it remains and always Barcelona :-*

Visca el Barça!
